Koa Wood Furniture By Robert Lippoth

Robert Lippoth specializes in creating astoundingly beautiful custom koa wood furniture. Since 1998, Robert has worked from his shop on the pristine island of Maui. The furniture Robert creates is made from the endemic and indigenous wood species found in Hawaii. Robert believes in using only the best grade koa and local Hawaiian wood. His signature style mimics flowing lines, tapers and curves found in nature. As a result of careful attention to detail and hard work, Robert is known for creating koa wood pieces that reflect the awe-inspiring color, harmony, and beauty of the islands.

Robert’s Hawaiian wood furniture and sculpture is exhibited at the Hana Coast Gallery in Maui. His koa furniture has been internationally commissioned throughout the Pacific Rim and the mainland. Robert has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Woodworking and Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. His expertise also includes Interior Design, and Architectural Millwork.

“Often it is in nature that I find the most inspiration. Even a single blade of grass represents a perfect example of a subtle curve and gentle taper. When I design a piece I think of it as sculpture in the format of furniture. The individual love and attention I give to each piece is evident in their aura and spirit. These pieces have heirloom quality.”

Ron Kent passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2018. The son of immigrants, Ron grew up in Los Angeles and attended Hollywood High School, where he met Myra Davis, whom he married in 1951 while serving in the Coast Guard. During his enlistment, Ron was transferred to the Territory of Hawaii, and he and Myra fell in love with the islands. After graduating from UCLA and establishing himself as a stock broker, Ron and Myra returned to Honolulu in 1965. Early in the marriage, Ron discovered that buying furniture was more expensive than building it himself. He tinkered with light sculptures and other media, but when Myra gave him a “toy” wood lathe for a birthday present, she changed his world. Turning wood on a tiny lathe suitable for 10-year-olds and using a sharpened screwdriver as a tool, Ron developed his gift for graceful shapes carving three-inch bottles. In a matter of months, the “toy lathe” was replaced by a larger one from Sears and proper tools which he replaced with larger, better equipment as he experimented with shapes, sizes and a variety of local woods.

A fund has been set up at the Hawai’i Community Foundation to sustain these prizes in the memory of Ron. To honor Ron’s love for Hawai’i, his passion for art, and his desire to support future artists, gifts can be made to the Ron and Myra Kent Fund at Hawaii Community Foundation, 827 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu, HI 96813, attn to Eric La ‘a or online at https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/give

– The furniture and art I create are inspired by my connection to natural forms, and having the tech/ mechanical ability make these ideas into reality. I see it as an amalgam of classically influenced styles, contemporary shapes, and playful imagery rendered with exotic materials. My challenge is to bring these elements together, and create from them a piece that works. My intention is to create functional, durable, utilitarian objects of beauty, that will last centuries. From the more than 400 pieces that I have created, here is a small sampling of my more current work: http://veneerartist.com/schurch-portfolio/

– I have been a teacher of furniture making, marquetry and veneering since 1985 and continue to develop programs and classes for the novice to the pro woodworker with seminars at many schools and clubs throughout the USA and abroad: http://www.schurchwoodwork.com/lectures_classes/index.html

– Drawing on my education acquired from traditional European trade schools, from my three apprenticeships to journeyman, I was able to follow my passion in the art of surface decoration, use the various skills I acquired to do my work. This path of learning about piano, then church organ building, Boat building, furniture restoration, building construction, and marquetry has given me the tools to provide consulting services to clients, high end manufacturing facilities and designers worldwide.
