I was born and raised in Honoka’a, a small sugar plantation town on the North East side of Hawaii Island. We grew up spending most days in the cane fields, rivers, and surf, forming strong connections with the land. I left the island after high school for college, and earned a degree in Fine Arts in Southern California. After moving back, I worked trade jobs and found work recovering wood from naturally fallen Koa trees in Hawaii’s high mountain lands. Working closely with Koa, I became interested in using its unique colors and grain in artwork and developed a process to present wood as wall panel art.
I hope you enjoy the work.
Aloha, Winter

Profile
Born in a small rural town of 8,000 in Nagano, Japan, Maho Shaw started working with wood when she was young at her father’s wood shop. Her grandfather started a carpenter business in his youth, and her dad took over the family business to keep the custom alive. Her father then passed his knowledge on to his three daughters who all worked in his shop building houses for their small town, Kisofukushima.
Maho went to a forestry and woodworking high school and after graduating, earned her architecture license while working at her father’s inherited family business. Eventually, Maho decided that she wanted to follow her own path and moved to Hawai’i. In Hawai’i she explored different avenues of woodworking, building houses, furniture, ukuleles, and eventually finding a true passion for the art of inlay.

Roy recently retired from the Department of Education where he was a drafting teacher at Radford High School, state resource teacher and educational specialist for Industrial Arts, and education officer overseeing the Repair and Maintenance Program.

Thomas Calhoun
I love story telling. Visual arts are the expressions of our shared human drama through the joining of excellent handcraft and sensitive story craft.
Whether I am telling a story from the native Hawaiian culture of my home, from one of the many cultures that now inhabit Hawaii, from a client’s life experience, or my own personal story, it is the work of finding a focused visual presentation that defines the shapes and materials of a pieces.
The magic of highly figured Koa, the broader palette of the many trees – native or not – now growing here, and all the other woods imported from all over the world help to make Hawaii a joy for the art of woodworking. The sun and wind through verdant slopes, the constant movement of stream and sea, the ever-changing open skies all provide unrivaled inspiration.
Such inspiration needs to be accompanied by an even greater amount of perspiration (to paraphrase Thomas Edison). Woodworking in the long view is not only shop work; it is also planting more trees than I will ever hope to use. The working of felling, milling, stacking, and drying are also parts of the process often better not left to others as their focus may not be the quality and final use of the wood.
My art constantly challenges me physically, mentally, aesthetically, and emotionally. What started as a creative endeavor has grown into a lifestyle I cannot imagine not living.
