Taller with Wood: Design and Construction Techniques
The expanding use of wood-frame and mass timber construction for mid- and high-rise projects is allowing architects and engineers to creatively achieve marketplace distinction. Increasingly, wood buildings of five, six and more stories are rising up among traditional concrete and steel shells as designers and developers embrace timber’s vast potential for lower costs, faster installation, and a significantly lighter carbon footprint. This interactive seminar will focus on three key aspects related to the design and construction of these project types. First it will highlight considerations associated with mid-rise wood-frame buildings, including how to maximize height and area through the use of sprinklers, open frontage, sloping sites, podiums, and mezzanines. Next, it will discuss the preconstruction and logistical aspects of mass timber projects that so often drive financial feasibility. Finally, it will focus on timber high-rises, emphasizing cost implications and design strategies that align with code provisions.
