The woods of Hawaii are numerous and beautiful. Many are from other lands and have since made themselves at home in these islands. Many of the native woods are endangered and we can’t even carve them. This sad state is a reminder that earth is an island and the recourses of that island are limited and need to be respected and cherished. I care down wood as well as drift wood and wood that is given me by people with down trees. It is a whole different process than carving stone. The grain of the wood is the documentation of the tree. I use that story, extending the life of the tree by creating sculpture that the tree is an active participant in. Each piece takes me on an adventure that ends up as a sculpture. I rarely know what I’m going to end up with when I begin a piece.
